The Natural Environment
The Natural Environment
at Penfield Academy
- At Penfield Academy, we believe that children learn best through meaningful, hands-on experiences in both indoor and outdoor environments. Our child-led approach honours every child’s right to play, explore, and connect with the natural world. The outdoor environment is viewed as an extension of the classroom, an ever-changing landscape that nurtures curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.
-
Rooted in the principles of Montessori education and inspired by Forest School philosophy, our program fosters independence, creativity, and respect for self, others, and the environment. We embrace the idea that the best classroom has no walls or limitations, where nature itself becomes a teacher and every season offers new opportunities for discovery and growth.
(Forest School Principles in Practice)
- Penfield Academy’s outdoor learning program reflects the six core principles of Forest School:
- 1. Consistency and Connection – Children engage in regular outdoor sessions that allow for reflection, adaptation, and ongoing learning.
- 2. Relationship with Nature – Learning takes place in a natural setting, helping children build a deep and lasting connection with the world around them.
- 3. Holistic Development – Every experience supports emotional, social, physical, and intellectual growth, nurturing confident and capable learners.
- 4. Supported Risk-Taking – Children are encouraged to assess and manage risks safely, developing problem-solving skills and resilience.
- 5. Professional Guidance – Our educators are trained and continuously developing their practice to ensure high-quality outdoor learning experiences.
- 6. Learner-Centered Approach – Each child’s curiosity, creativity, and pace of discovery shape the day’s learning journey.
- Our curriculum extends far beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. Learning at Penfield is an interconnected journey that blends academic foundations with hands-on exploration, creativity, and innovation.
- Children engage in experiences that nurture both mind and imagination, creating, designing, and building in our MakerField and participating in RoboThink sessions, where early engineering and robotics concepts come to life through guided exploration and collaborative problem-solving.
- Complementing our core Montessori materials, children also enjoy weekly sessions in art, music, Spanish, and French. Each subject area is designed to foster communication, cultural awareness, and creativity, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to express themselves in diverse and meaningful ways.
- At Penfield Academy, learning is not confined by walls, textbooks, or time limits, it is a living process that unfolds through exploration, imagination, and connection. Our goal is simple: to nurture happy, confident, and capable learners who see the world as their classroom.
