frequently asked questions
Do you still have any questions?
- (365) 880-3264
Are you affiliated with the church?
No, we share the space with the church, but Penfield Academy is not affiliated with any religion or faith
How does the mixed-aged classroom work?
Each classroom includes a three-year age span to support individualized learning, recognizing that children of different ages have varying needs and developmental stages. A mixed-age environment also reflects real life, where people naturally interact across age groups. Research shows that children in mixed-age classrooms tend to develop more positive attitudes toward learning and life overall (Stone, 1998; Veenman, 1996).
Are you a forest school?
No, we are not a forest school. We balance our time between indoor and outdoor learning. Often, we bring the indoors outside and the outdoors inside, taking what fascinates us in nature back to the classroom, and extending classroom discussions into outdoor experiences.
Why STEAM and what do you teach in STEAM?
We embrace technology and believe in the power of multimodal learning to support differentiated instruction. Some researchers even argue that coding is the new literacy (Wing, 2006). At Penfield Academy, we take a thoughtful, age-appropriate approach, beginning with low-tech coding activities where students learn to ‘instruct’ a robot without using a screen. Once they have built a solid foundation, we gradually introduce screen-based tools and apps. In addition to our tech-based learning, our MakerField STEAM space invites children to explore hands-on creativity. Here, they can experiment with various materials and loose parts, try sewing, and even begin basic woodworking.
What if my child gets hurt when sewing or woodworking?
Let’s be honest – adults can get hurt too. Just like any Montessori material, woodworking and sewing are introduced to each student individually. During the first few weeks, we place a strong emphasis on teaching safety protocols. This approach aligns with the principles of the risky play movement, which distinguishes between risk and hazard. Our role as adults is to eliminate hazards while allowing space for appropriate risk. Engaging in manageable risk gives children the opportunity to experience positive stress, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence.
Why robotics, and what is RoboThink’s role?
Robotics involves the design, construction, operation, and application of robots. Research shows that engaging in robotics can enhance children’s attitudes toward technology and science education, while also fostering creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration (Dede, 2010; Jung & Won, 2018; Kompourakis, 2013). RoboThink is a globally recognized organization with centers in numerous countries around the world. Its structured, hands-on curriculum makes it a valuable addition to Penfield Academy’s program, enriching our students’ learning through innovative, tech-forward experience.
