Our Name

A Name Reflecting Growth and Discovery

Penfield Academy is named in honor of Dr. Wilder Graves Penfield (1891–1976), whose life exemplified integrity, compassion, and a dedication to improving the lives of others. Dr. Penfield is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in brain surgery, including the development of the “Montreal Procedure” that mapped the brain in unprecedented ways. Beyond medicine, he was a talented writer of historical novels and medical biographies and a passionate advocate for education. He co-founded the Vanier Institute of the Family to support and guide learning within the home, recognizing it as “humanity’s first classroom.” For his extraordinary contributions, he was recognized as “the greatest living Canadian.”
